Asian Family Lives Off Rats! Only Rats!

Hanuo Prepares The Rats For Cooking

Twelve-year-old Changchang returns from the fields with small animals she's caught for dinner.

Her mother and brother, Hanuo and Jinghua, prepare the meat and cook it on a grill made of three stones supporting a wood fire. It's just enough food to feed her family of six.

Tonight, they dine on rats. Only rats.

"Look what we've got. It's time to eat." Jinghua said. "How can anyone eat anything but rats? This is a treasure. They're so nutritious".

This is a story about how one Asian family adopted this way of life to be free from debt.

"The eating of rats is a delicacy," Jinghua said. "It is misleading to portray the eating of rats as an act of desperation. It is not."

"I can't remember the last time I ate anything else," says Changchang. "We're been eating rats forever."
